Alan is a partner in the Sweetwater, Texas firm of Wetsel, Carmichael & Allen. Alan is Board Certified in Civil Trial Law and, in addition to an active trial practice, represents landowners in wind, solar, oil and gas issues. Like his partner, Rod Wetsel, Alan is a frequent author and lecturer on renewable energy topics. Alan is a member of the Texas Association of Defense Counsel, a Life Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation, and a Director of the State Bar of Texas.

Alan attended Texas Tech University on a golf scholarship and lettered all four years. After receiving his undergraduate degree in Finance, Alan attended the Texas Tech Law School, where he was a member of the Law Review. Following graduation, Alan practiced in Lubbock with the firm of McCleskey, Harriger, Brazill & Graf for twenty-three years before returning to his hometown of Sweetwater to join his long-time friend, Rod Wetsel, in the practice of law. Alan and his wife, Paula, a counselor for the Sweetwater ISD, have four children, Kristen, a pharmacist in Lubbock; Ryan, a resident in maxillofacial surgery at Baylor Medical in Dallas; Dane, a teacher and coach at Sweetwater ISD; and Dylan, a freshman at Texas Tech University. Alan and Paula also have two grandchildren, Jonathan and Sydney.
